FAQ
Quick questions, quick answers.
Is this genetically modified?
No. NABI MG-11 black wheat was developed by Dr. Monika Garg and her team at NABI Mohali through conventional plant breeding, crossing a Japanese landrace with high-yielding Indian wheat, not via genetic modification. The Indian government does not currently permit GM wheat for commercial cultivation.
Why is it more expensive than regular atta?
Two reasons. First, yields are about 20% lower than standard wheat, the chromosome substitution that gives it the anthocyanin colour also reduces grain set. Second, this is direct-from-farm with no aggregator margin in the middle. You are paying the farmer, the packing, and the courier, not eight links of a supply chain.
How do I use it? Does it taste different?
It's earthier and a little nuttier than regular wheat. For chapatis, start at a 50:50 mix with your usual atta until you and the family get used to the deeper colour, then dial it up. Works beautifully in parathas, dalia, and rustic breads.
Are there health claims I should know about?
Peer-reviewed research (Garg et al., NABI) has measured higher anthocyanin, dietary fibre, iron, zinc, and phenolic content versus standard wheat. Anthocyanins are antioxidants found in the same family as those in blueberries and jamun. Beyond that, we make no therapeutic claims. We're farmers, not a pharmacy, please consult a doctor for medical advice.
Can I get atta (flour) instead of whole grain?
Not this season, we sell whole grain only, packed at the farm. Most home buyers grind at the neighbourhood chakki on the day of use, which keeps the oils fresh and the colour vivid. We'll consider offering atta in future seasons once we hold a milling licence.
Is COD (cash on delivery) available?
Not this season. Industry data shows ~25–30% of COD parcels are returned versus 2–3% of prepaid, each return costs us forward + return shipping plus possible damage to the pack. We may whitelist repeat customers for COD later.
What about FSSAI? Are you licensed?
We have applied for FSSAI Basic Registration. Once issued, the 14-digit number will appear on every pack and in the footer of this site. Please ask if you need to see the certificate before ordering.
